Supermarkets are essential to the retail experience.
Encompassing a large footprint, these stores are required to house everything from food and drinks to household products and entertainment offerings like magazines and gift vouchers.
Of late, supermarket brands are also offering what’s known as express or metro stores that condense the offering in order to fit into inner city and smaller locations.
While occupying a smaller space, these offerings still need to cater to the diverse needs of each and every customer.

The Project
Hurst was tasked with designing, constructing and fitting out a Coles Express location in the Victorian suburb of Ripponlea.
At the time of construction, the Ripponlea location was the first Coles Express store in Australia to offer specialty kosher food for the community, highlighting just how diverse the store’s offering needed to be.
With the ability to oversee every aspect of this project, we were able to incorporate solutions that maximised space in order to deliver on a great variety of products within a traditionally smaller store.
Some of the solutions suggested were the thoughtful placement of the deli and the coffee hub to encourage patronage without taking away from the floor space needed to stock everything from milk and olive oil to potato chips and toilet paper.

Seamlessly blending a large service offering into a comparatively smaller space, Coles Express Ripponlea is an asset to the broader community. Offering convenience and ease of access, this store provides locals with the groceries they need, when they need them.
With speciality offerings such as a kosher product range and a designated area to make a hot cup of coffee or tea, Coles Ripponlea also acts as a drawcard for people just passing through, bringing more business to the local area.
