The expansion of Dillwynia Correctional Centre was part of the NSW Government’s $3.8 billion Better and Safer Prisons program. Designed to address overcrowding and expand access to rehabilitative and education programs, helping to reduce recidivism rates was the overarching aim. Additionally, with more beds in the area, innates could be closer to the Sydney court system, helping to reduce travel times.
As part of our project scope, our Sydney team worked to deliver a programs and inmate services building, as well as a dedicated education building and multiple indoor and outdoor recreational areas.
One of the key facets of the project was the introduction of an inmate services building. Designed to be a hub where inmates can access mental health services to support recovery and rehabilitation, the building was critical to achieving the objectives of the Better and Safer Prisons program.
In every portion of our scope thoughtful consideration was given to the surrounds and their impacts on the inmates. With this in mind, both the inmate services area and recreation areas were designed with trauma-informed principles at the forefront.
We are a company built on the foundations of working hard and being honest and humble in the pursuit of delivering uncompromising spaces. During the course of this project we learnt new modes of operating in light of the strict on-site protocols. We also saw the impact that project work can have on people.
By actively working to improve the occupational health and safety for inmates and staff alike, the foundation was laid to help provide living quarters, training and programs that work together to help to reduce the rate of reoffending.
It’s always a privilege to have a hand in constructing the critical infrastructure that our country relies on.
