Opening on the 23rd of June in 1970 Kings Cross railway station is a heritage-listed railway station. Located on the Eastern Suburbs line, the underground station services around 22,078 passengers daily.
Despite being heritage listed it’s important to keep critical infrastructure up to date to ensure it services the greater population as efficiently and effectively as possible. This is why Hurst were engaged by Transport Sydney Trains to undertake major upgrade works for this famous station.
As part of the refurbishment project our Sydney team was tasked with installing brand new tiling as well as tactile indicators and completely repainting the station. While working to modernise the station, these works also played a vital role in improving aspects relating to accessibility.
Tactile indicators often go unnoticed to some. To others, they are essential to detecting potential hazards. This is because people who are blind or have low vision use the raised circles and bars known as tactile indicators to safely navigate bustling and hazardous environments such as train stations.
Ensuring that key pieces of infrastructure meet the standards of today is critical to providing the community with the best services possible. By implementing refurbishment works that increased accessibility and customer satisfaction, the Hurst team brought Kings Cross railway station into the 21st century.
Working in such an iconic location and navigating the challenges of an underground railway that remained operational was a privilege for our team. Once again we were able to deliver on our key principles of helping our clients conduct business as usual in the face of upgrade works and creating uncompromising spaces.
